Will you rent for less than one week? Back to Top

Generally no.  We do not want to tie up a whole week for a shorter rental.  Exceptions are made for rentals outside of the peak months of June, July and August, and for reservations made close to the rental week.  We will consider renting for a shorter period if it is within 30 days of the beginning of the rental.  Rates for a weekend of up to four days are 60% of the weekly rental, plus the usual cleaning fee. 

What is the deposit for and what do I need to do to get my deposit back? Back to Top

The deposit serves two purposes.  The first is to hold the reservation.  Once the entire rental amount is received (one month prior to starting the rental) it serves as a security deposit to cover any damages.  Your deposit will be returned once you return your key, we get verification from the cleaning crew that there is no damage, and we receive a bill from the cleaning crew for cleaning the house.

If you don't send the final payment, your reservation will be canceled, and we keep the deposit.

What happens to my deposit and rental amount if I have paid in full and need to cancel? Back to Top

If you cancel your reservation, we keep your rental payment, but return your deposit.  We will attempt to rent the house, and if we do so will return your rental payment.  If you need to cancel please contact us as early as possible.

Can I pay by Credit Card? Back to Top

Yes you can.  We will send you an invoice electronically that you can pay through Pay Pal.  You can use this for your deposit and your rental payment.  We will charge you the 3% charge that is charged to this.  If you want to use this option please let us know.

When do I have to make the final payment?  What happens if I don't pay on time? Back to Top

You need to make final payment 30 days before the rental starts.  Once we receive final payment, we will mail you the key.  We will attempt to contact you if payment isn't received when due, but we reserve the right to cancel the reservation.  If your late payment requires that we use a more expensive method such as FedEx to send you the keys because there isn't sufficient time to receive them by US Mail, we will deduct that cost from your security deposit.

Why do I have to pay the entire rental amount when I have already paid a $500 deposit? Back to Top

You need to pay the full amount even though you've already paid a $500 deposit, because we hold that amount as a security deposit which is refunded at the end of the rental.

Can I arrive earlier than check in time, and can I leave later than check out time? Back to Top

Unfortunately no.  The cleaning crew needs to get access to the house early in the morning to allow them time to do the laundry and clean the house for the next tenant.  Arrival time is 4 pm and check out time is 9 am.

We will hold your reservation while we send you a contract and allow time for you to promptly respond.  You need to return the contract and a $500 deposit to hold the reservation.  If you rent Cottage Road for 1 week at $1075 per week, you will need to send $1200 ($1075 plus $125 cleaning fee) thirty days prior to the rental start date.

Does the house come with a car? Back to Top

There is no car which comes with renting the house.  Renters use the island taxi service for getting luggage from the boat to the house, and bike or walk around Chebeague.

How do I return the house key? Back to Top

The key should be mailed back in a padded or cardboard mailer to our home address which is included on the contract.

Reservations for next summer are made starting in December when returning renters have confirmed their requests,

I see that wireless internet is available at Cottage Road.  Can you guarantee access to the internet? Back to Top

We contract with Chebeague.net to provide internet access.  They use a wireless transmission system with an antenna on the house to bring the service to the house.  It works most of the time, but there are times when in doesn't work.  It generally has sufficient bandwidth to check email and surf the web but not to download or watch videos.  Since the availability of internet service is beyond our control, we can not either guarantee that it will be working or that there will be adequate service to meet your needs.

I see that a gas barbeque is available at Cottage Road.  Can you guarantee that gas will be available? Back to Top

We make sure that gas is available at the beginning of the summer.  There is generally a sufficient supply to make it through the fall.  It depends on the amount of use that prior renters have made of the grill.  Since there is not a source to have the tanks refilled on Chebeague, and we are not there during the summer, if there is no gas you will need to bring a tank to the mainland and have it filled.

What happens if something stops working while we are there? Back to Top

We do our best to make sure that everything is in working order and if something important stops working while you are there we will make reasonable attempts to have it repaired or replaced.  Since Chebeague Island is only accessible by boat, this is a much more difficult process than it would be on the mainland.  We have some backup up appliances on hand to cover emergencies.  There is an old but functional refrigerator in the basement and we have a countertop convection oven if the oven stops working.  We appreciate your understanding that there may be delays in repairs or replacement.

What supplies are provided? Back to Top

We stock the houses with supplies at the beginning of the summer.  That includes cleaning supplies, toilet paper, paper towels, etc.  We ask tenants to replace what they use so that renters later in the summer will have the same access to supplies that they did.  Although there are generally sufficient supplies available, since we have no control over what prior tenants have used and replaced, we cannot guarantee that all supplies will be available when you come.
